PMC Brons Cover 12


PMC Brons Cover 12 has been developed by us specificallly of fullfill the need of mancfacturers of bronze castings. This has been developed after several trials of various compositions and in cooperation with some of the leading Indian copper alloys manufacturers. PMC Brons Cover 12 is a mixure of several products. Each one has a specific purpose for the melting and re-melting of bronze ingots/waste/scrap.
Its main purpose is to protect molten bronze metal from oxidation. At the same time it allows undesirable impurities to come to the surface and get entrapped at the top and thereby prevent such impurities from getting entry (escaping) into final castings.
The importance of using PMC Brons Cover 12 comes from the fact that with the high cost of copper, no melter could afford to get this metal get lost in rejected finished casting and/or dross containing high metal contents which is then thrown away or which fetches low market value.
PMC Brons Cover 12 helps minimising the loss of metal in dross and finally leaves in the powdery form of dross. When the other types of products e.g.Borax etc. are used, the dross available is in lumpy form and has higher content of metal. Thus such dross reduces the final metal yield.
PMC Brons Cover 12 helps bringing to the surface foreign particles from the molten metal e.g. clay, sand, etc. which are sometimes carried with the scrap or contaminated ingots. Many times the products which are recommended by others for use with such molten bronze metal contain highly acidic or alkaline chemicals. This eventually corrodes the life of the crucible lining and increase the cost of the finished castings indirectly.


After attaining the proper temperature by previous firing of the reverberatory or crucible furnace the best method is to put the ingots or heavy scrap at the bottom of the furnace. The light scrap should be compressed or baled as far as practicable so that it can be compressed to the bottom of the furnace.
Metal starts melting slowly and steadily. This scrap and ingots should not occupy more than one-third of the volume of the crucible or reverberatory furnace to start with.
As the metal starts melting more and more scrap should be slid in (ensuring that it goes to the bottom of the molten metal) from the side door of the reverberatory furnace by opening the lid and using the stirrer for the new scrap additions to go to the bottom of the molten metal.
When the charging is complete to occupy two-third of the furnace addition of more scrap should be stopped and the molten metal temperature should be brought to approximately 800° C.
The required amount of PMC Brons Cover-12 should then be spread over to the surface of the molten metal. Usually it has been found by us that the quantity of approximately 0.75 kg. to maximum of 4.0 kg. is added per 100 kgs. of molten. Actual quantity depends upon the contaminents which entered into the melt.
After spreading PMC Brons Cover 12 stirring should be applied to ensure that the particles of contaminents come to the surface as easily as possible. At this time the temperature of the melt should reach the required free molten metal i.e. 900° C to a maximum of 100° C, depending upon the composition copper, zinc, tin.
By proper spreading of PMC Brons Cover Flux 12 the melter is assured of avoiding oxidation of the bronze metal in the molten stage. It also enables molten metal to separate away from the contaminents in the beaby (globule) form which would otherwise occur it other types of chemicals are used for replacing the same.
Skim off the dross and start pouring the metal at the correct temperature into the cast mould. At this time, it is necessary that melter observes, as far as praticable, the dross should be in the powdery form and not in lumpy form.
The above method ensure good quality bronze castings and cuts down the wastage of cast metal.
